Close to 200 bikes destroyed in fire at Shadnagar bus-stop

Hyderabad: Close to 200 motorcycles parked near a bus-stop in Shadnagar were gutted in a fire accident here on Saturday evening.
Staff of the Electricity department were trying to remove iron pipes that were put around a defunct transformer using a gas welding machine when sparks from the machine fell on a shed made with dry palm leaves. This blew up in a major blaze, spreading fast enough to reduce the motorbikes parked near the shed to mere metal frames.
On receiving a call to the fire control room around 5.30 p.m., a fire tender from Shadnagar rushed to the spot and doused the flames within an hour, said Additional District Fire Officer (Ranga Reddy District) G.V. Prasad. The intensity of fire was high with the petrol tank of a bike exploding, he said.
Though the fire tender, which ran out of water in between, got refilled and returned to douse the fire, the effort went in vain with all the motorcycles being damaged in the mishap. The negligence of electrical department staff led to the incident, he said.
Shadnagar Inspector V. Ramakrishna said no one was injured in the incident.
